The kids are... wait, WHAT?
I've just returned from the Boston show of the "Truckstops and Statelines" tour, featuring The Academy Is..., Panic! At The Disco and hellogoodbye, and having seen Acceptance perform the song "This Conversation Is Over," all I can say at the moment is that there is something deeply, satisfyingly ironic about a roomful of teenagers singing "You don't have to follow" in unison. | | Saturday, February 4th, 2006 | | 12:13 am |
All them chiquitas in Omaha
After listening to James Blunt's Back To Bedlam, quite possibly the worst album of 2005, for the second and (fingers crossed!) last time ever, I needed to hear "We're An American Band" to cleanse my palate. It's one of the very few songs I've ever paid to download from iTunes, but I have no desire to own anything else from Grand Funk Railroad except "Some Kind Of Wonderful" (also downloaded). Sure, it's got one of the most kickass cowbells in rock and roll, not to mention a chorus that demands to be shouted from the mountaintops. But that's not why I love it. I love it because of a bass riff the size of Nebraska. Because Mark Farner might be a great rock vocalist who simply got saddled with subpar material. And because no other rock song so forcefully declares, without an ounce of irony or equivocation, "We will drink your beer, fuck your women and leave a smoking crater where your town once was. Have a nice day." |
